Get Behind the Wheel by Craig Haller

Get Behind the Wheel.

Get Behind the Wheel is an upbeat Americana record made for the open road. Featuring a cover of Wilco’s “Passenger Side” and some of Nashville’s finest session musicians, it pairs melody with motion — songs meant to be turned up and let go.

Written and recorded in Nashville, the album captures the feeling of escape, perspective, and return.

Tracklist.

  • She is the girl that fathers warn their sons about.
She seems like a catch, but to her it’s just a game of catch and release.

She don’t know right from wrong, but she’s got it going on.
I might as well be crazy just to think about it.
I’m just a simple man, doing the best I can,
But I’m attracted to danger — gotta learn the hard way.

    She comes a-calling — I always answer.
    I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t say no to her.
She’s a Ferrari in the fast lane,
Burning rubber like a robber trying to get away.

She is the girl that makes a fool of an honest man.
She is so sweet, but her sweetness is a poison that pulls me in.

She makes me feel so good, so very understood.
I might as well be crazy just to play along.
I’m just the other man — don’t know how this began.
I wish that she was mine, but it was only my turn.

    She comes a-calling — I always answer.
    I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t say no to her.
She’s a Ferrari in the fast lane,
Burning rubber like a robber trying to get away.

Next time she calls me — I shouldn’t answer.
I probably will, but I gotta say no to her.
She’s a Ferrari in the fast lane,
Burning rubber — but I really gotta get away.

  • You've spent a lifetime waiting in line
Waiting to get on the ride
It's time to recognize that you're already on one

Spins of laughter, whirls of love
Twists of fate that hang above
A different thrill awaits on every corner

    This life is a ride
Do what makes you feel alive
    It goes up and down,
spins around and gives you one hell of a fight
Live it up, live it loud
Live a life that makes you proud
When you fall down, get up, you'll fall again
Just try to stay above the ground
Do your best, enjoy the ride

No one leaves this world alive
There's only one way off this ride
    Enjoy it while it lasts
    'Cause it won't last

May all the free falls that frighten you
    Excite you into something new
Fear can make you weak or it can make you stronger

    This life is a ride
Do what makes you feel alive
    It goes up and down,
spins around and gives you one hell of a fight
Live it up, live it loud
Live a life that makes you proud
When you fall down, get up, you'll fall again
Just try to stay above the ground
Do your best, enjoy the ride

  • Pick me up now,
    On out of this hole.
I can't seem to see the other side.
    Take me to a place
Where there's no one left to blame —
It's just me that's trying to hide.

    I don't know
    Where the loneliness goes
When I have you in my arms.
    You take my breath away,
    That's all that I can say —
I just need you here right now.

There’s a sun that never dies,
    A sky that never cries,
But now the sun don’t shine anymore.
I’m sick of being a whore,
    My Mississippi Queen,
    The devil’s in my dreams.

    Wake me up,
Get me out of this dream —
    ’Cause life’s a constant waterfall.
    Never really thought
That life could be this hard,
But thanks to you I’m not alone.

    Come with me now,
Let’s get out of here —
We’ll drive to San Francisco Bay.
We’ll take a trip or two,
Baby, I’ll be next to you,
    And we’ll return again,
    Return again someday.

    We will be free,
    Baby, you and me.
    I’ll take care of you,
No matter how hard life can be.

There’s a sun that never dies,
    A sky that never cries,
But now the sun don’t shine anymore.
I’m sick of being a whore,
    My Mississippi Queen,
    The devil’s in my head.

    Oh no, not again...

There’s a sun that never dies,
    A sky that never cries.
I don’t have to be alone anymore —
    That’s what love is for.
    My Mississippi Queen,
    You’re always in my dreams.

  • If I had a dollar for each mistake that I’ve made,
I’d go to New York City and buy the place.
I am so grateful that I’m still alive —
    I’m guided by invisible lines.

Here’s a toast to all the friends I’ve made,
Whether they’re above the ground or in the grave.
For our paths to cross, I must have done something right —
    I’m guided by invisible lines.

It’s a long road to nowhere, to a place with no name.
If I did it all over, I’d do it the same.
I’m so restless from wandering, all of my life —
I’d slow down if I could, but I’m guided by invisible lines.

Here’s a kiss for the women I’ve loved.
We made each other strong when we moved on.
I hope you’re happy ’cause I’m doing just fine —
    Still guided by invisible lines.

It’s a long road to nowhere, to a place with no name.
If I did it all over, I’d do it the same.
I’m so restless from wandering, all of my life —
I’d slow down if I could, but I’m guided by invisible lines.

If I had a song for every wrong note I played,
I’d go to Music City and make it rain.
Pick up a six-string and find me some rhymes,
And be guided by invisible lines.

  • The hand tic-tocs around the clock — where has the time gone?
I try to feel the moment but it keeps on keeping on.
I got settled in the groove and tried to do the best I could.
Sometimes it gets so hard but still I try to see the good.

Slow it down — let it go.
Keep my eyes on the horizon
’Til the angels call me home.

My thoughts drift off the rails and drive me crazy now and then.
I shake it off with laughter as I move full steam ahead.
Am I maimed or just deranged? Either way, time marches on.
I've got to get my head right to keep my mind from being withdrawn.

Slow it down — let it go.
Keep my eyes on the horizon
’Til the angels call me home.

The sun settles like a picture as I recollect the day.
I tell myself, “I’m grateful,” but I long for yesterday.
I wanna drive into the dust and settle down in a desert town,
Take a chance on a second chance to turn this dream around.

Slow it down — let it go.
Keep my eyes on the horizon
’Til the angels call me home.

  • Hey, wake up — your eyes weren’t open wide.
For the last couple of miles, you’ve been swerving from side to side.
You’re gonna make me spill my beer
If you don’t learn how to steer.

    Passenger side, passenger side,
I don’t like riding on the passenger side.

Roll another number for the road.
You’re the only sober person I know.
Won’t you let me make you a deal —
    Just get behind the wheel.

    Passenger side, passenger side,
I don’t like riding on the passenger side.

    Should've been the driver
    Could've been the one
    I should've been your lover, but I hadn't seen

Can you take me to the store and then the bank?
I've got five dollars we can put in the tank.
I've got a court date coming this June — I'll be driving soon.

    Passenger side, passenger side,
I don’t like riding on the passenger side.
